Naomi Campbell
As one of the legendary "Super Six," Naomi
Campbell has more than earned her place in the modelling hierarchy. Naomi Campbell
worked hard through the early 80s and 90s, pushing against the fashion world's
prejudice. She was the first black model on the cover of French Vogue and the
following year was the first black model on the September issue of American
Vogue, the most important issue of the year. "I wasn't being booked for
certain shows because of the color of my skin," Campbell said in an
autobiographical piece for The Guardian. "I understood what it meant to be
black. You had to put in the extra effort. You had to be twice as good."
Thankfully, Campbell had support. Campbell became part of the
"Trinity" of the fashion world with Linda Evangelista and Christy
Turlington. Naomi told The Guardian that the girls would stick up for her,
saying "if wanted to have them in their show, they had
to book me, too." Now, Naomi Campbell gotten the recognition she deserves, as she
received the Fashion Icon Award from the CFDA Awards in spring 2018.
